Vatican City: Pope Leo urged Christians not to lose hope during difficult moments, saying that the presence of Jesus can bring peace and strength even when life feels uncertain and overwhelming.
Speaking during his weekly Angelus address to pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, the Pope reflected on the Gospel story in which Jesus walks on water during a storm and approaches his frightened disciples. The passage from the Gospel of Matthew describes the disciples struggling against strong winds and waves when they suddenly see Jesus coming toward them on the water.
Instead of immediately bringing them comfort, the sight frightens the disciples. Jesus then speaks to them and tells them to take courage and not be afraid. For Pope Leo, these words carry an important message for people facing fear and uncertainty in their own lives.
Pope said that the presence of Jesus changes everything. He pointed to the example of Peter, who initially finds the courage to step out of the boat and walk toward Jesus on the water. However, when Peter becomes afraid, he begins to sink. Jesus then reaches out and saves him.
Pope Leo said the story reminds Christians of the importance of keeping their eyes focused on Jesus, particularly when they are surrounded by difficulties. Fear, he explained, can quickly weaken faith, while trust in God can help people remain steady even when circumstances seem beyond their control.
The experience of the disciples eventually leads them to make a strong declaration of faith. After witnessing what happened, they recognise Jesus as the Son of God.
Pope connected this moment with another passage in Matthew’s Gospel, where Jesus speaks about the power of faith without doubt. He said the disciples experienced this truth themselves on the lake, as the peace brought by Christ reached them even in the middle of the violent storm.
For Pope Leo, the message of the Gospel is not only about overcoming fear. It also offers guidance on how Christians should respond to both success and failure.
Pope highlighted two important lessons from the story. The first is the need to avoid becoming proud when things are going well. Success can sometimes make people believe they are stronger or more capable than they really are.
The second lesson is not to give in to despair when life becomes difficult. There can be moments when people feel helpless, especially when their efforts do not seem to produce results. Instead of moving forward, they may feel as though they are falling further behind.
Pope Leo encouraged people not to believe that such moments mean they have been abandoned by God. He said Jesus remains present even during the darkest periods of life.
He explained that welcoming Christ into the journey of life through prayer, the sacraments and listening to the Word of God can help people discover peace, light and strength. These, he said, can guide believers through difficult situations and give them the courage to continue.
Pope’s message comes at a time when many people face personal struggles, uncertainty and challenges that can make the future difficult to see clearly. His reflection on the storm and the frightened disciples offered a reminder that faith does not necessarily remove every difficulty, but it can help people face those difficulties with greater trust.
