China takes a major step in reusable rocket race with successful Zhuque 3 landing

Beijing: China has taken an important step forward in the growing race to develop reusable rockets after private aerospace company LandSpace successfully landed the first stage of its Zhuque 3 rocket following an orbital launch.

The achievement marks the first successful ground based recovery of an orbital class rocket booster by a Chinese private company. It also places LandSpace in a small group of private space companies that have demonstrated the ability to send an orbital rocket into space and bring its first stage back to Earth for possible future use.

The Zhuque 3 lifted off on Wednesday, August 19, from the Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Pilot Zone in northwest China. The launch successfully placed the Honghu 03 satellite into its planned orbit. After completing its part of the launch, the first stage separated and began its return journey.

The booster travelled about 390 kilometres before reaching its designated landing area in Gansu province. Instead of falling into the sea or being destroyed after completing its work, the rocket used its engines and onboard guidance systems to control its descent. It then deployed landing legs and made a controlled vertical landing on solid ground.

For LandSpace, the successful landing was an important recovery from its previous attempt. The company's first Zhuque 3 flight in December 2025 successfully reached orbit, but the first stage was unable to complete its landing attempt. The booster was lost during the final part of the recovery process.

The latest mission showed that the company had made significant improvements in controlling the rocket during its return to Earth. It also demonstrated that the rocket's landing systems, engines, guidance technology and structure could work together during an actual orbital mission.

The Zhuque 3 is about 66 metres tall and is built mainly from stainless steel. It uses liquid methane and liquid oxygen as fuel. Methane has become increasingly important in the development of new reusable rockets because it can support powerful engines while offering characteristics that are useful for repeated flights.

LandSpace has designed the first stage to be reusable. The company has said that the booster could eventually be used for as many as 20 flights. Such a system could help reduce the cost of launching satellites because the most expensive parts of a rocket would not have to be manufactured for every mission.

This is the same basic idea that transformed the commercial launch industry through SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets. Blue Origin has also demonstrated successful recovery and reuse of orbital rocket boosters with its New Glenn programme.

LandSpace has therefore become an important new competitor in the reusable rocket sector. However, the company still has a considerable distance to travel before it can match the operational experience of SpaceX. A successful landing is only one part of reusable rocket technology. The more difficult test will be whether LandSpace can inspect the recovered booster, carry out necessary maintenance and launch it again safely.

The company is reportedly aiming to fly a recovered Zhuque 3 booster within about six months. If that happens successfully, it would provide much stronger evidence that the rocket can become a practical reusable launch system rather than simply completing a successful recovery demonstration.

The development also reflects China's wider push to build a strong commercial space industry. Chinese authorities have been encouraging private companies to develop launch vehicles, satellites and other space technologies alongside the country's traditional state owned aerospace organisations.

China has also been testing reusable rockets through its government backed space programme. In July, a Long March 10B rocket stage was successfully recovered from a sea based platform. The LandSpace mission used a different approach by bringing its booster back to land on landing legs.

These developments show that China is testing several methods of recovering rocket stages and is seeking to reduce the cost of reaching orbit.

Reusable rockets could become particularly important as China expands its satellite industry. Large satellite networks require frequent launches, and companies that can offer reliable launches at lower costs could gain a major advantage in the commercial space market.

For LandSpace, the Zhuque 3 success is also important for its future business plans. The company is seeking to establish itself as one of China's leading private launch providers and has been preparing for a potential listing on Shanghai's STAR Market.

The successful landing does not mean China has overtaken SpaceX or Blue Origin. Those companies have years of experience with repeated booster landings and reuse. But it does show that the gap in reusable orbital rocket technology is becoming narrower.

The next stage will be closely watched. If LandSpace can successfully launch the recovered Zhuque 3 booster again, China will have taken another major step toward regular reusable rocket operations.

For now, the successful landing represents a significant moment for China's private space industry. A rocket that once would have been discarded after carrying a satellite into orbit has returned safely to Earth. The challenge now is to prove that it can do the same thing again and again, reliably and at a commercially useful cost.
