Kyiv: At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured in Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine overnight into Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. An Indian citizen was among those killed, according to the Ukrainian president.
The main targets of the overnight attack were the Kyiv and Odesa regions. The strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region marked the sixth consecutive day of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
In Kyiv city, eight people were killed and five injured, including three children, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service. Seven people were killed in the Darnytskyi district and another person died in the Holosiivskyi district.
A railway depot and other railway facilities in Kyiv were also struck by ballistic missiles. Ukrainian Railways said seven people were killed at the facilities, including six of its employees. Another railway employee was injured and taken to hospital.
The railway company said the strike caused extensive damage, including the complete destruction of a workshop. Fires were reported at several locations and emergency workers continued their response.
In the wider Kyiv region, outside the capital, three people were killed and 12 injured, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service. All three deaths were reported in Boryspil.
A five storey residential building, a shop and two private houses were damaged in Boryspil. Three cars caught fire and a business building and vehicle service station were also damaged.
Emergency workers evacuated 48 people from the damaged residential building and rescued two people who were trapped under rubble. Eight people were injured at one location, including two children. Two people were killed and three injured after another business building was damaged, while one person was killed at a vehicle service station.
The attack began at about 6 pm on Monday, August 31, according to Ukraine's Air Force. Russia used ballistic, cruise and anti radar missiles along with 218 drones and decoys. About one third of the drones were reported to be jet powered.
Ukraine's Air Force said its air defences destroyed or neutralised 199 aerial targets, including 187 drones and five ballistic missiles. These figures were provided by the Ukrainian military and could not be independently verified.
The latest strikes followed several days of repeated Russian attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region. Air raid warnings have disrupted daily life in the capital, with residents repeatedly urged to take shelter.
Ukraine has reported an increasing use of jet powered drones in recent Russian attacks. Zelenskyy said Russia had launched nearly 1,500 drones against Ukraine over four days, with more than half of them jet powered. That figure was a statement by the Ukrainian president and has not been independently verified.
The latest attack came only days after another deadly incident in the Kyiv region. On August 29, a Russian drone strike on an ammunition facility triggered a major explosion that killed at least 37 people, according to earlier Ukrainian and international reporting.
The latest attacks also affected the Odesa region, where Russian strikes damaged civilian and other infrastructure, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The strikes came as diplomatic efforts to end the war continued. Zelenskyy said on Monday that he had held talks with US President Donald Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner about efforts to advance peace negotiations.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday and said the war needed to end for humanitarian reasons.
Russia has denied deliberately targeting civilians. Ukraine and Russia regularly give conflicting accounts of military strikes, and some reports of damage and casualties cannot be independently verified.
Emergency workers remained at affected locations on Tuesday as authorities continued to assess the damage and update casualty figures.
