ISRO successfully launches EOS 05 in major Earth observation milestone

Sriharikota: India’s space programme achieved a significant Earth observation milestone on Friday with the successful launch of EOS 05 aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV F17 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

The rocket lifted off at 2:55 am Indian Standard Time from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. ISRO confirmed that GSLV F17 successfully and precisely placed the Earth observation satellite into its intended Sub Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.

The mission was the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle programme. The GSLV F17 is 51.7 metres tall and had a liftoff mass of about 420.5 tonnes.

EOS 05 weighs 2,367 kg and is designed to provide Earth imaging from geosynchronous orbit. ISRO describes it as India’s first ever imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit.

The successful launch is an important step in expanding India’s ability to observe large areas of the Earth at frequent intervals. The satellite is expected to support applications including agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management, water resources and other Earth observation activities once it becomes operational.

However, EOS 05 has not yet reached its final operational geosynchronous orbit. GSLV F17 first placed the satellite into a Sub Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. The satellite will now carry out a series of orbital manoeuvres using its onboard propulsion system before reaching its intended operational position.

This distinction is important because the successful launch and initial orbital injection do not by themselves mean that the satellite has completed its full operational deployment. Further manoeuvres and commissioning are required before EOS 05 begins its planned Earth observation operations.

ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said after the launch that EOS 05 was in good health and that the launch vehicle had precisely placed the satellite into the intended orbit. He also highlighted improvements in the GSLV programme that have allowed the vehicle to carry increasingly heavier spacecraft.

The 2,367 kg EOS 05 is the heaviest satellite carried by the GSLV launch vehicle, according to Narayanan. The achievement reflects improvements in the vehicle’s structural design and propulsion systems.

The mission also marks an important point in the recent history of India’s launch programme. The previous successful GSLV mission was GSLV F16, which launched the NISAR Earth observation satellite, jointly developed by NASA and ISRO, on July 30, 2025.

India’s space programme also faced setbacks during the period between those missions. On January 12, 2026, the PSLV C62 mission carrying the EOS N1 satellite and other payloads was unsuccessful. Before that, the GSLV F10 mission carrying EOS 03 was unsuccessful on August 12, 2021, after an anomaly involving the cryogenic upper stage.

The successful GSLV F17 mission therefore provides a further demonstration of the launch vehicle’s ability to carry a large Earth observation spacecraft into a high altitude transfer orbit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO on the successful launch and described it as a proud moment for India. He also highlighted the growing partnership between ISRO and Indian industry in strengthening the country’s space sector.

For Earth observation, the main significance of EOS 05 lies in its planned geosynchronous operation. Satellites in this type of orbit can observe large areas repeatedly, making them useful for tracking changes on the ground and supporting activities that require frequent observations.

EOS 05 is now expected to undergo its planned orbital manoeuvres and commissioning. Its successful launch marks the completion of a major stage of the mission, while the satellite’s transition to its operational orbit remains the next important step.

The mission adds a new capability to India’s Earth observation programme and marks another important achievement for ISRO’s launch and satellite technology.
