Accra: Young Catholics from 16 West African countries are gathering in Accra, Ghana, for the 2026 West African Youth Days, a five day meeting focused on peace, hope and the role of young people in addressing challenges across the region.
The event opens on Monday, September 7, under the theme, “Take courage: young Catholics, actors and agents of peace and hope in West Africa.”
The first day will welcome the different national delegations and introduce participants to Ghanaian culture. The day will end with a welcome ceremony, Eucharistic adoration, the Rosary and meditation.
On Tuesday, September 8, participants will reflect on the relationship between faith and culture under the theme, “Rooted in faith, courageous in witness.” Following the opening Mass, a workshop will examine digital evangelization and how social media can be used for mission.
The day will also include a cultural evening where young people from the participating countries will present their music, dances and other artistic expressions.
Leadership and social engagement will take centre stage on Wednesday, September 9. Under the theme, “Strengthened for mission,” young Catholics will take part in catecheses with bishops and workshops addressing social change in West Africa, climate justice and peacebuilding.
The programme will also examine the fight against terrorism, violent extremism and conflicts affecting the West African subregion. The discussions are intended to encourage young people to take an active role in promoting peace and responding to social challenges.
Thursday, September 10, will focus on pilgrimage and solidarity under the theme, “Walking together in faith and service.” Participants will learn about missionary vocations and take part in a Marian day at a parish in Accra.
The day will include catechesis on Mary, the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Mary will be presented as “Queen of Peace and a model disciple for young people.”
The gathering will conclude on Friday, September 11, with a mission focused on helping hope grow. A catechesis with the bishops will prepare participants to become actors and agents of peace before the solemn closing Mass.
The closing Mass will be presided over by Archbishop Julien Kaboré, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana.
On the morning of Saturday, September 12, the young people will return to their respective countries, taking with them a mission centred on peace, hope and reconciliation.
