Beijing: Andrea Ding Yang was ordained Archbishop of Chongqing in China on Tuesday, following his appointment by Pope Leo XIV under the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China.
Ding Yang’s episcopal ordination took place on September 8, after Pope Leo XIV approved his candidacy and appointed him Archbishop of Chongqing on July 28, 2026.
The appointment was made within the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China.
Ding Yang was born on September 16, 1981, in Hechuan District of Chongqing. He studied at the seminary in Beijing from 2000 to 2006 before undertaking a year of pastoral training at Saint Joseph Parish in Yuzhong, Chongqing.
He was ordained a priest on May 24, 2007, and later served as assistant parish priest at Saint Joseph Parish.
From 2009 to 2011, he lived in Macao and continued his theological studies at the University of Saint Joseph. He then served as a formator at the National Seminary in Beijing from 2012 to 2014.
In March 2014, Ding Yang moved to Rome to study at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. He returned to China the following year.
Before his appointment as Archbishop of Chongqing, he served as parish priest in several parts of the archdiocese, including Tongliang, Tongnan, Tongguanyi and Jiulongpo.
