New Delhi: Dutch semiconductor company Nexperia and Tata Electronics have announced a strategic partnership covering semiconductor wafer fabrication, assembly and testing, technology development and ecosystem cooperation in India.
Under the agreement, the companies are laying the groundwork to produce Nexperia's MOSFET portfolio at Tata Electronics' upcoming 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. They will also collaborate on assembling and testing Nexperia's discrete semiconductor products at Tata Electronics' semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, Assam.
The partnership also includes cooperation in technology development, research, innovation and the wider semiconductor ecosystem. It brings Nexperia's semiconductor expertise together with Tata Electronics' expanding manufacturing capabilities in India.
Nexperia interim Chief Executive Officer Stefan Tilger said the partnership would combine the strengths of the two companies in technology, manufacturing and innovation while supporting the development of semiconductor capabilities in India.
Tata Electronics Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Randhir Thakur said the partnership would cover important parts of the semiconductor manufacturing value chain and support the development of India's semiconductor ecosystem.
The announcement comes as SEMICON India 2026 opened in New Delhi. The three day event is being held from September 17 to 19 at Yashobhoomi and has brought together companies, investors, researchers, government representatives and other participants from the global semiconductor industry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on September 17. The Indian government is using the event to promote investment and development across semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, chip design, materials, research and skills.
Tata Electronics is developing a commercial semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera and a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad. The two projects have a combined investment of $14 billion, according to Tata Electronics.
The Dholera facility is planned as a 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant. The Jagiroad facility is being developed for semiconductor assembly and testing.
The Nexperia agreement does not mean that the company has already started manufacturing its chips in India. The companies have said they are laying the groundwork for Nexperia MOSFET production at the Dholera facility. They have not announced a specific date for the start of production or the expected volume of Nexperia products to be manufactured in India.
The financial value of the Nexperia and Tata Electronics partnership has also not been disclosed separately. The $14 billion figure refers to Tata Electronics' two semiconductor projects in Gujarat and Assam and should not be presented as the value of the Nexperia agreement.
Nexperia is headquartered in the Netherlands and is owned by China's Wingtech Technology. However, Wingtech does not currently control Nexperia following an ongoing corporate and legal dispute.
The dispute has involved court proceedings in the Netherlands and China. In August, a Chinese court froze stakes connected to several Nexperia subsidiaries in China. Nexperia has said the measures do not affect its day to day operations or business continuity.
There is no indication that the Tata partnership was caused by the dispute involving Wingtech and Nexperia. The companies have presented the new agreement as a long term manufacturing and technology partnership.
The deal comes as India is seeking to develop a larger domestic semiconductor industry and strengthen its position in the global semiconductor supply chain. The Indian government approved the second phase of its semiconductor programme, Semicon 2.0, on July 15, 2026, with an outlay of Rs 1.275 trillion.
The programme covers areas including research and development, chip design, semiconductor manufacturing, advanced packaging, equipment, materials and talent development.
Tata Electronics has also announced other semiconductor related partnerships around SEMICON India 2026, covering areas such as semiconductor materials, technology development, advanced packaging and workforce training.
The Nexperia agreement adds another international partner to India's growing semiconductor ecosystem. However, the companies have not yet announced when Nexperia products will begin production in India or the scale of future output.
