Aichi Nagoya: India reached 48 medals at the 2026 Asian Games on Tuesday after shooter Neeru Dhanda won gold in the women's individual trap event, while boxers Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal reached their respective finals.
Dhanda won the women's individual trap title with 28 hits out of 30 in the final. China's Sun Yunong took silver with 26 hits, while Kuwait's Hajar Abdulmalik won bronze with 21.
Dhanda's score set a new Asian Games record in the event. Her victory also made her the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold in women's trap shooting.
The victory came after Dhanda had helped India win silver in the women's trap team event. Dhanda, Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer combined for 328 points to finish behind China, which won gold with 346 points. Kuwait took bronze with 325 points.
Dhanda had also topped the individual qualification with 118 points, securing her place in the final.
India's medal tally stood at five gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze medals, giving the country 48 medals in total. India was 12th in the overall medal table at the time of reporting.
Boxing added two more major developments for India, with Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal reaching their respective finals.
Parveen defeated China's Li Shu 5 0 in the women's 65kg semifinal to reach the gold medal bout.
Panghal reached the men's 80kg final after defeating Uzbekistan's Fazliddin Erkinboev 4 1. He recovered after losing the opening round and won the next two rounds to secure the victory.
India also secured a boxing bronze through Narender Berwal in the men's plus 90kg category. Berwal lost his semifinal to Kazakhstan's Aibek Oralbay by a unanimous decision.
In archery, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Neeraj Chauhan advanced to the men's recurve individual quarterfinals. Dhiraj defeated Cheng Hsiang Hui of Chinese Taipei 6 2, while Chauhan beat South Korea's Kim Je Deok 6 4.
In the women's recurve event, Kumkum Mohod reached the quarterfinals after defeating Bangladesh's Saima Salahuddin 6 0. Kirti Sharma was eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to South Korea's Kang Chae Young.
India's women's squash team also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Iran 3 0 in its final group match.
There were mixed results for India in other events. Indian surfer Kishore Kumar Anbarasu was eliminated in the men's shortboard quarterfinal after losing to the Philippines' Toby Espejon.
In kurash, Vipin Kumar exited the men's 66kg competition after losing to South Korea's Hyeonsu Yoon.
In cricket, rain forced the men's quarterfinals involving Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh advanced because they had higher rankings. Sri Lanka will face defending champions India in the semifinal.
More Indian athletes were scheduled to compete in athletics and other events later on Tuesday, including Gulveer Singh and Avinash Sable in the men's 5000 metres and Indian relay teams.
Tuesday's results have strengthened India's medal campaign, with shooting producing a gold and a silver and boxing adding a bronze and two finalists.
