India’s September GST collections rise 14.7% to ₹2.04 lakh crore

New Delhi: India’s gross Goods and Services Tax collections rose 14.7% year on year to ₹2,03,521 crore in September, according to provisional government data released on Thursday. The September collection was above ₹2 lakh crore after the August figure came in just below that level.

The September collection was higher than the ₹1,77,365 crore collected in the same month last year. The latest figures show continued growth in GST revenue during the first half of the financial year 2026 to 2027.

The increase came from both domestic transactions and imports, although import related GST grew much faster. Gross GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 10.1% to ₹1,37,996 crore from ₹1,25,334 crore a year earlier.

GST revenue collected from imports increased 25.9% to ₹65,525 crore from ₹52,031 crore in September 2025. The stronger growth in import related collections was an important part of the overall increase in September.

After refunds, net GST revenue rose 18.1% year on year to ₹1,76,520 crore in September, compared with ₹1,49,517 crore a year earlier. Total GST refunds stood at ₹27,001 crore, down 3% from ₹27,848 crore in September last year.

The year on year growth rate was 15.4% in July, 14.8% in August and 14.7% in September. The pace of growth has therefore remained strong but has eased slightly from July.

For the first six months of the financial year, from April through September, India’s gross GST collections reached ₹12,46,278 crore. This was 11.6% higher than the ₹11,17,088 crore collected during the same period of the previous financial year.

Net GST revenue during the same six month period stood at ₹10,66,116 crore, an increase of 10.4% from ₹9,65,455 crore a year earlier.

Maharashtra recorded the highest GST collection among the states in September at ₹29,986 crore, an increase of 15% from a year earlier. Karnataka collected ₹13,884 crore, up 16%, while Gujarat recorded ₹12,222 crore, an increase of 17%.

Uttar Pradesh recorded GST revenue of ₹8,882 crore, up 18%, while Telangana collected ₹5,327 crore, also an increase of 18%. Not all states recorded higher collections, with some reporting declines during the month.

The government data are provisional and may change after finalisation.

The September figures should not be treated as a direct measure of economic growth. GST collections reflect tax payments associated with transactions and reporting cycles, while economic growth is measured through a wider range of indicators.

The latest figures show that both domestic transactions and imports contributed to the increase in GST revenue, with import related collections growing considerably faster. India’s gross GST collections have also recorded double digit growth during the first six months of the current financial year.
