Pope Leo XIV says saints show how faith shapes history

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called for careful historical investigation into the lives of saints, saying their witness demonstrates how faith can shape history and inspire people to respond to the challenges of their own time.

Addressing participants in the “Holiness in History” Conference in Rome, the Pope stressed that the recognition of holiness, whether among ancient saints or more recent witnesses of the faith, must be supported by authentic and credible evidence that leaves no room for reasonable suspicion.

The conference, organised by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, is taking place at the Pontifical Augustinianum Patristic Institute. It brings attention to the relationship between holiness and the historical circumstances in which people live out their faith.

Pope Leo explained that historical research in causes for canonisation goes beyond documenting past events. Its purpose is to reveal the exemplary lives, spirituality and reputation for holiness of those being considered for sainthood.

He also highlighted the importance of examining how changes in history and culture influence the way people understand holiness. Such changes do not mean that holiness itself changes over time. Rather, they help the Church understand how people have lived out the Gospel in different circumstances.

The Pope noted that the faithful look to the saints for examples of how to live their own lives. Their witness and intercession can help members of the Church face present challenges and recognise opportunities to respond to them through faith.

He further encouraged reflection on how the presence and witness of saints have influenced the course of history. By responding to God's call within their own circumstances, the saints have brought together faith and daily life, dedicating themselves to building the Kingdom of God.

Concluding his address, Pope Leo pointed to the Easter mystery as a source of renewal and transformation. He said the lives of the saints demonstrate the power of Easter to bring change and offer a vision of history shaped by faith.

The Pope's message highlighted the importance of historical evidence in recognising holiness while affirming the continuing relevance of the saints for the Church and its mission in the present day.
