Jio shares surge on debut after India's record $3.2 billion IPO

Mumbai: Shares in Jio Platforms, the telecommunications and digital services business controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, surged on their first day of trading in Mumbai on Wednesday following India's largest initial public offering. The shares opened at 1,358 rupees, compared with the IPO price of 1,119 rupees, marking a gain of about 21.4 per cent. The strong debut lifted the company's market value to approximately $131.5 billion, making it India's second largest publicly listed company by market capitalisation at the time of the report.

The public offering raised approximately $3.2 billion, marking a major milestone for Reliance Industries, the conglomerate led by Ambani. The listing brought one of India's largest telecommunications and digital services businesses into the public market, giving investors a new opportunity to buy shares in a company with a vast customer base and growing digital ambitions.

Jio Platforms attracted bids worth more than $77 billion during the IPO, reflecting exceptional investor demand. The offering received widespread attention in India's financial markets, highlighting interest in the country's technology and telecommunications sectors.

The value of bids was much higher than the amount raised because investors sought more shares than were available in the offering. The $77 billion figure represents investor demand, not the money received by Jio Platforms.

The shares were offered at 1,119 rupees each before opening at 1,358 rupees. The opening price represented a gain of approximately 21.4 per cent over the IPO price. Later reports indicated that the shares reached an intraday high of 1,375 rupees on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Before the listing, Jio Platforms had been valued at up to $108.3 billion. The rise in its share price pushed its reported market capitalisation to around $131.5 billion after the debut. Market capitalisation represents the total market value of a company's outstanding shares and changes as its share price moves.

The listing is significant for Reliance Industries, which has expanded beyond its traditional oil and chemicals businesses into telecommunications, retail, technology and consumer services. Jio Platforms has become a central part of this strategy, helping the group strengthen its position in India's growing digital economy.

The debut also marked an important development in the Reliance group's corporate history, as it brought a major business to the public market after two decades without a comparable group listing. It gives investors a direct opportunity to participate in the growth of the group's digital operations.

Jio serves more than 530 million customers, according to reports, making it one of India's largest telecommunications operators. Its extensive customer base and network have helped it establish a strong position in a highly competitive market.

The company also has established international technology investors, including Meta Platforms and Alphabet, the parent company of Google. Their involvement reflects Jio's importance in India's digital sector, although the IPO itself was conducted by Jio Platforms rather than either of these international companies.

Despite its broader digital ambitions, telecommunications remains central to Jio's business. The company competes with other Indian operators, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Maintaining its market position will require continued investment in network infrastructure, technology and services.

The proceeds from the IPO are intended primarily to help repay or prepay certain borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, Jio Platforms' telecommunications subsidiary. The remaining funds are available for general corporate purposes. The planned use of the proceeds could help strengthen the subsidiary's financial position.

Jio's strong debut came as the wider Indian stock market faced pressure from concerns about rising oil prices and inflation. Indian shares fell during Wednesday's trading session as investors also awaited the latest monetary policy decision from the United States Federal Reserve. The contrast between Jio's performance and the wider market highlighted the strong demand for the company's shares.

However, the sharp rise on the first day does not guarantee continued gains. Investors will continue to assess the company's earnings, spending requirements, competition and ability to expand its digital services while managing its financial obligations.

Telecommunications businesses require substantial investment to maintain networks and improve services. Competition, pricing pressures, regulatory changes and operating costs could influence Jio's future performance.

The listing gives investors a public market valuation of Jio Platforms and increases the company's visibility in India's financial markets. Its performance in the coming months will help determine whether the enthusiasm surrounding the IPO can be supported by its financial results and long term growth prospects.

For Reliance Industries, the debut marks a significant step in bringing its digital business into the public market. For investors, it opens a new chapter in one of India's most closely watched corporate growth stories.
