New Delhi: C Sadanandan Master, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from Kerala, has emerged as a possible candidate for a ministerial position in the Union government amid speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle this month.
Reports indicate that Sadanandan's name is receiving attention within the BJP's Kerala unit and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His possible induction is being discussed at a time when Kerala has only one representative in the Union Council of Ministers, Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi.
However, neither the BJP's central leadership nor the Union government has officially confirmed a reshuffle or Sadanandan's possible appointment. The timing and composition of any changes to the ministerial team also remain unclear.
The speculation comes amid a series of ministerial departures in recent months, which have renewed discussions about changes to the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
George Kurian, who represented Kerala in the Union government as Minister of State, resigned from the Council of Ministers in June after his Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21, 2026. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation on June 23.
Kurian had served as Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. His departure left Suresh Gopi as Kerala's remaining representative in the Union Council of Ministers.
Another ministerial departure followed in July when Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu resigned from the government after his Rajya Sabha term ended in June. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation on July 24.
More recently, Union Minister of State L Murugan resigned on October 13, 2026. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation on October 15 with immediate effect.
Murugan had held responsibilities in the Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs ministries. Reports said he wanted to return to Tamil Nadu to strengthen the BJP's organisational activities in the state.
These departures have added to speculation about a possible restructuring of the Union government. Earlier reports in August had also suggested that the BJP leadership was considering changes to the ministerial team, including the redistribution of portfolios and the induction of new members.
The discussions have reportedly included political representation, the role of National Democratic Alliance partners and preparations for future elections. However, the government has not announced an official timetable for any reshuffle.
Sadanandan's possible elevation is particularly significant for the BJP in Kerala, where the party is seeking to expand its political influence in competition with the state's two major political fronts, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF).
The possible appointment also comes after the Congress led UDF returned to power in Kerala in the May 2026 Assembly elections, ending ten years of LDF rule. The BJP won three seats in the 140 member Assembly.
A ministerial position for another leader from Kerala could increase the state's representation in the Union government and strengthen the BJP's political presence in the region.
Sadanandan has a long association with the BJP and is known for his political activities in Kannur district. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu on July 21, 2025, under Article 80 of the Indian Constitution, which allows the nomination of members with special knowledge or practical experience in areas such as literature, science, art and social service.
He was nominated alongside lawyer Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and historian Meenakshi Jain.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sadanandan following his nomination, praising his courage, work as a teacher and social worker, and commitment to empowering young people.
Sadanandan's personal history has also attracted public attention. In 1994, he lost both his legs in a politically motivated attack in Kannur, an incident that has remained an important part of his public life.
Reports indicate that sections of the Kerala BJP leadership and the RSS support his possible inclusion in the Union government. His political background and long association with the party have brought him into focus amid discussions about greater representation for Kerala.
However, support from state level political organisations does not guarantee a ministerial appointment. The final decision rests with the BJP's central leadership and the constitutional appointment process.
Under Article 75 of the Indian Constitution, Union ministers are appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister. Any appointment would therefore require an official decision and announcement.
It also remains unclear whether Sadanandan, if selected, would receive Cabinet rank or be appointed as a Minister of State. Both positions form part of the Union Council of Ministers but carry different levels of responsibility.
The possible reshuffle is also being viewed against the BJP's long term political plans ahead of the 2029 general election. Greater representation for different states and stronger organisational coordination are among the issues discussed in connection with possible changes to the government.
For Kerala, the possible appointment of Sadanandan would mark an important development in the BJP's efforts to strengthen its presence at the national level. However, until an official announcement is made, his possible entry into the Union government remains a matter of political speculation.
