Numismatics, often called the ‘hobby of kings’, as in the old times it was pursued by kings and the elite class of the society. It is also one of the oldest hobbies in the world.
For those who are not familiar with the term, Numismatics is the study of coins and other currency units. It is also associated with its appraisal and collection. Numismatists study the physical properties, production technology, and historical context of specimens of currency.
Shan k Fernandez was introduced to this world of Numismatics from a very young age. A hobby he cultivated since his primary school days, inspired by his father who often gifted him coins of different countries. During one of his long vacations, he began to search for coins and notes from different countries, contacted people with a similar hobby and started building up his collection slowly.
The collection helped him to know more about the currency he collected. He was fascinated to learn about the country that the currency belonged to, the people behind its evolution and even the culture of the countries. He soon realized the value of his collection and took utmost care of his possessions.
The primary school boy who once waited for his father to get one piece of foreign note have grown his numismatics to an advanced level. His collection now includes wide varieties of graded and ungraded coins, currencies, stamps and medals. He has a collection of more than 5000 bank notes, from Rare Republic India, British India and other World currencies. He has more than 10,000 graded and ungraded coins and a variety of rare medals and stamps.
Shan exhibits this rare collection through his Instagram page SKF_collections. Over the next few weeks, he will take us on a journey of his rare collection giving an insight into the story behind each rare currency.
