New Delhi: BJP has performed better than expected in the Vidhan Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. The Yogi government has assured its continuity. At last count, the party was leading in 265 seats. With this, the party has gained a simple majority.
Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, which was facing a strong contest, has a lead of only 113 seats. Congress is leading in only six seats. Mayawati's BSP is facing a heavy defeat. The took could lead in only five places.
In Uttarakhand too, the BJP has consolidated its rule. The BJP has a clear lead in 44 of the total 70 seats. It is advancing in 21 seats. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading with 89 seats out of 117. Congress is facing a collapse here, retaining the lead in only 12 seats.
In Goa, too, Congress lost its chance. BJP, which is leading in 18 seats, has already started talks with other parties to form a government. With this, the winning chances of Congress, which has a lead of only 13 seats, have diminished. There is a possibility of forming a BJP government in Manipur too. BJP leads in 25 seats in the 60 - member assembly while Congress leads in only 12 seats.
In Uttar Pradesh, BJP candidates are expected to contest all the seats in Lakhimpur Kheri and Hathras constituencies where the farmers' strike was expected to pose a strong challenge to the party in the elections. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has a clear lead in Gorakhpur constituency and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya has a clear lead in Sirathu constituency. SP leader Akhilesh Yadav is leading in Kalhal.
