Saint John Baptist De La Salle

Saint John Baptist De La Salle

John was Born in a wealthy family in Reims, France, on April 30, 1651 and was the first son of his parents. He received the tonsure at the early age of 11 and started preparation for priesthood. At the age of 16, he was named Canon of the Reims Cathedral.

Though he had to assume administration of the family affairs after his parents died, he completed his theological studies and was ordained a priest on April 9, 1678 at the age of 27. Two years later, he received a doctorate in theology.

Moved by the plight of the poor, John decided to put his talents in order to provide education to their children, who were often left to themselves and badly brought up by their parents.

He left his family home, to concentrate and be more effective in his mission and moved in with the teachers. John even renounced his position as Canon, abandoned all his wealth and formed the community that became known as the 'Brothers of the Christian Schools'.

John had to face stiff opposition from the ecclesiastical authorities who resisted the creation of a new form of religious life. Nevertheless, the 'Brothers' succeeded in creating a network of quality schools throughout France.

Saint John pioneered in programs for training lay teachers, Sunday courses for working young men and one of the first institutions in France for the care of delinquents.

Afflicted with asthma and rheumatism in his last years, John died on Good Friday in 1719, at Saint Yon near Rouen, at the age of 68.

In 1900 John Baptist de La Salle was declared as Saint and in 1950, Pope Pious XII named him as Patron Saint of all those who work in the field of education.
