Ranil Wickremesinghe elected president in crisis-hit Sri Lanka

Colombo: Ranil Wickramasinghe has been elected as the new President of Sri Lanka. 134 out of 219 people voted in favor of Ranil. Ranil, who is currently the Acting President, was the Prime Minister of Lanka six times.

223 members of the 225-member parliament voted to elect the president. A new president had to be elected after the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapakse following the popular uprising following the financial crisis. Ranil Wickrama Singhe will be the President for the remainder of Gotabaya's tenure.

But the protestors stated that they will not accept the process of electing Ranil Wickramasinghe as the President. People have taken to the streets to protest against the decision.

Three people including Ranil Wickramasinghe contested for the presidency. Former education minister and media activist Dullas Alahaperuma and leftist People's Liberation Front leader Anura Dissanayake are the other candidates. Opposition support was for Alahapperuma. Ranil was supported by Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Public Perumuna.
