What is Supermoon? - Tingling Mind 13

Do you know that the size of the Moon is fixed?

Whatever change we see in its shape and size is because of the distance and direction at which the moon resides during that time in respect to the Earth.

Since the moon's orbit around the Earth is egg-shaped, sometimes during the month-long lunar cycle the moon is at its shortest distance from Earth; other times it's farthest away. If the moon is full at the same time, it's very close to Earth, you see a supermoon. The opposite phenomenon is called a micro moon.

A supermoon can appear up to 14 % larger and 30% brighter than a full moon. However, there are only 3-4 supermoons in a year! This year, it appeared last on 11th August 2022. Did anyone see it? The next full Moon will be the famous “Harvest Moon,” which will be best seen on Friday, September 9, 2022. Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

This specific supermoon moment has a name, syzygy, and it's the name given in a configuration that occurs for just a moment, when the Moon is directly between the Sun and the Earth, in a straight line.

The supermoon in August is often called the “Sturgeon moon”. It is a Native American name. This period of the year has been traditionally considered the best time for catching the sturgeons in the Great Lakes.

A moon illusion takes place as it moves around the elliptical orbit. Minor differences can be noticed in the sky as the Moon rotates around the planet in its elliptical orbit.

This movement of the Moon is also believed to be responsible for the changes in tidal force. The Moon is the one natural satellite of the Earth and is known to deflect light that it receives from the sun.

As children, we have all heard different stories of the Moon and, even in our science courses, discovered the mysteries behind its apparitions and phases. In the natural order of things, numerous phenomena happen, such as the new moon, the full moon, the supermoon, and even eclipses.

It is the Job and Hobby of astronomers and research scientists to understand these phenomena and reveal the causes behind them for all people to know and increase their knowledge.

On the night of a "supermoon," the moon appears larger and brighter than any other time. The moon does not change, but the way it appears to the Earth does.

Facts about the supermoon also include that this phenomenon might even take place on no-moon days as even if we are unable to see the Moon, it is always present in the sky.
