Saint Laverius

Saint Laverius

Saint Laverius was also known as Laverio. He was the son of Achille and was brought up in an agnostic family. Laverius worked as an officer in the imperial Roman armed force. After being converted to Christianity, he started preaching about Christ in the boulevards of Teggiano, Italy.

Enraged by his Christian belief, Regent Agrippa ordered Laverius to be captured. He was then tormented, put in plain public view for open maltreatment and scorn. Laverius was then asked to make offerings to pagan gods, which he refused, following which he was thrown to wild animals in the amphitheatre. The animals, instead of attacking him, bowed before him.

Laverius was thrown back into the prison cell. However, an angel liberated him during the night and ordered him to head out to Grumentum (present-day Grumento Nova, Italy). He touched base on 15 August 312 and started to preach and baptize the converts. Agrippa sent troopers to capture him.

He was caught, lashed, and when he would not stop preaching Christ even while being beaten, he was executed.

It is said that after the execution, his soul was seen flying from the body to heaven. His body was abandoned by the soldiers. However, a Roman matron came over and gave him a Christian burial.
