Kyiv: Russia continues heavy shelling in the eastern and southern provinces of Ukraine. The attack made life miserable as authorities struggled to restore electricity and water supply during the harsh winter. Most of the area is under snow.
Due to a shortage of fuel, the heating system in the houses cannot be operated. Heavy rains also add to the misery. The temperature is mostly minus.
After days of Russian attacks, city authorities said workers were nearly finished restoring heat, water, and electricity, but high demand forced some blackouts.
"We know that the terrorists are preparing fresh attacks. We can be certain of this "Late on Sunday, Zelenskiy stated in his daily video address. Sadly, they won't stop acting out as long as they have missiles.
According to Zelenskiy, the upcoming week may be just as challenging as the one just past, when attacks on the nation's electricity infrastructure caused the most severe power outages for Ukrainians since Russian troops invaded the country in February.
Moscow made no comment in response to Zelenskiy's allegations.
Moscow has claimed that since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24 that it does not target civilians. On Thursday, the Kremlin claimed that Kyiv could "end the suffering" of its people by acceding to Russia's demands.
In September, Russia annexed large portions of Ukraine's east and south, and President Vladimir Putin declared that Moscow's territorial demands are unassailable. Zelenskiy declared that Ukraine's territorial integrity cannot be negotiable after the annexation and that he would not engage in negotiations with Moscow.
There were no devastating attacks on Kyiv or any other major cities on Sunday, which was generally quiet. According to the central army command of Ukraine, Russian forces fired multiple times at civilian targets in the Dnipropetrovsk region and launched four missile attacks.
Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said Russian forces had launched several failed attacks on the town of Soledar, near Bakhmut, and had taken heavy losses in a separate push towards Avdiivka.
Heavy fighting was also going on in the northeastern Kharkiv region, near areas recaptured by the Ukrainian army in September and October, he said on YouTube.
The attacks have increased as cold weather sets in, boosting energy demand, he told Russian state television.
Zelenskiy has criticised Kyiv's mayor for not doing enough to help beleaguered residents.
Along with energy supplies, food supplies have also been disrupted by the war, with Ukraine's grain exports unlikely to reach 3 million tonnes in
November, compared with 4.2 million tonnes in October, as Russia tries to limit ship inspections, Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said late on Sunday.
