Winter storm freezes Niagara, transforms waterfall into wonderland

After a massive winter storm swept over the United States and Canada, chunks of ice and snow-capped rocks could be seen at the base of Niagara Falls.

Plunging temperatures over the Christmas holiday season transformed the waterfalls into a winter wonderland.

The blizzard caused widespread disruption across North America and killed at least 39 people in New York.

Many of the fatalities occurred in Buffalo, just south of Niagara Falls.

The storm dumped over 4ft (1.2m) of snow on the city, causing major traffic problems and knocking out power to many homes.

Weather that is slightly warmer is on its way.

Despite the frozen conditions, cascades of water could still be seen thundering down the falls on the US-Canada border.

In 2015, a Canadian ice climber stunned visitors by scaling a frozen section of the gorge.
