In the context of increasing attacks and hate propaganda against Christians and churches in various parts of India, a massive protest meeting was held by Christians in the country's capital, Delhi. Yesterday Sunday (19 February 2023), thousands participated in the protest meeting held at Jantar Mantar under the leadership of 79 Christian churches and organisations.
Delhi Archdiocese Archbishop Anil Koto, Faridabad Diocese President Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharnikulangara, Gurugram Malankara Bishop Thomas Mar Antonios, Vicar General Varghese Vinayanand, All India Christian Association President Michael Williams, Spokesperson Dr. John Dayal, and others spoke. The preachers pointed out that attacks on Christians in the country have increased by 150 percent in the last four years.
The protests are demanding the formation of the SIT special investigation team in the states to investigate the violence, providing police protection to those facing mob attacks, taking legal action against the political and social groups responsible for the violence, and compensation for those arrested illegally.
The joint strike committee will submit a petition to President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
According to United Christian Forum, 597 incidents of anti-Christian violence against Christians were reported in 21 states in 2022. 1198 attacks have been committed against churches and institutions. Thousands of women and children participated in the event with placards and slogans.
