Islamabad - Imran Khan, Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister was arrested outside the Islamabad High Court where he was facing charges of corruption, which Khan has claimed as politically motivated.
The arrest was reported by Geo TV.
Footage released by Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, shows a large group of security personnel in riot gear escorting Khan away in a van.
Khan was ousted as PM in April last year and has been campaigning for early elections since then.
Khan's aides have alleged that the security forces "attacked" the court premises before arresting him. The Information Minister, Marriyum Aurangzeb, has not yet issued a statement on the matter.
Khan faces over 100 cases of corruption, which were filed against him after he was removed from office by a parliamentary vote in April last year.
If convicted, he could be barred from holding public office, with national elections scheduled for November.
In response to Khan's arrest, his party has reportedly vowed to stage protests, which could further destabilize the country's already fragile political and economic situation.
Last November he survived a gun attack on his convoy while holding a protest march.
On Monday, the military warned him against making "baseless allegations" after he again accused a senior officer of plotting to kill him.
Pakistan has a long history of political infighting, and the military has ruled the country for almost half of its existence.
