Imphal : The ongoing crisis in Manipur has prompted eleven sports personalities, including Olympians, to write a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, urging him to find a solution and restore peace and normalcy in the state. Among the signatories is Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu, who has warned of returning their awards and medals if the situation does not improve.
The letter highlights several demands, including the unblocking of National Highway-2, which has been blocked for weeks at various locations, leading to a rise in the prices of essential commodities. The sports personalities have emphasized their desire for peace and have requested the government to address their concerns.
Kunjarani Devi, a renowned weightlifter and Padma Award winner, conveyed a simple message to the government, expressing the need for peace. She emphasized that they want to live a life similar to those in Delhi or Mumbai and requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritize peace.
Boxer L Sarita Devi stated that despite their contributions to the sports field and the laurels they have brought to the country, they feel a lack of respect. She warned that if their demands are not met, they are prepared to return their medals.
Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur for a four-day visit and engaged in consultations with various stakeholders, including cabinet ministers, civil society organizations, and political leaders, in an effort to bring lasting peace to the violence-hit state. He expressed his commitment to working together with the people of Manipur to restore normalcy.
The ethnic clashes between the Meiteis, residing in the Imphal valley, and the Kuki tribe, settled in the hills, began on May 3 due to the Meiteis' demand to be included under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. The clashes have resulted in over 80 lives being lost so far.
