Delhi: Bishop Deepak Valerian Tauro, the Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi, India has expressed his deep concern on the 'distressing' events that unravelled during the Archdiocese of Delhi during the last few days.

In a distressing turn of events, the Delhi Archdiocese has experienced two alarming incidents that have threatened the freedom to practice the Catholic faith. Prompted by these unsettling occurrences, the Archdiocese urgently appeals to the state government and law enforcement agencies for increased security and protection of places of worship and clergy members.
The first incident took place on the 31st of May in Faruk Nagar, where Father Vijay Kullu received a call from the local police station regarding a complaint related to Church activities. Seeking counsel from Father Vincent D'Souza, the Vicar General of the Delhi Archdiocese, they visited Faruk Nagar on the 1st of June. However, during their visit, a group of approximately 25-30 individuals confronted them, demanding the closure of the church. They even went as far as removing a signboard bearing the name "Dinon ki Mata." The timely arrival of the police prevented the situation from escalating further.
In the second incident, on the 3rd of June, a group of 4-5 individuals visited a temporary prayer room in Kherki Daula and took photographs. The following day, a mob of 20-25 individuals forcefully entered the prayer room after the morning Mass. They physically assaulted Father Joseph Amalraj and issued a week-long ultimatum to cease all worship activities. These assailants accused Father Amalraj of attempting religious conversion, adding to the religious disharmony prevalent in the region.
The Delhi Archdiocese is deeply saddened and disturbed by these incidents, which impede the fundamental right to religious freedom enshrined in the Constitution. As a peaceful and devout Catholic community, our regular prayer services are intended solely for our community members. Therefore, we earnestly request the state government and law enforcement agencies in Haryana to ensure the safety and security of our places of worship, allowing us to exercise our faith without fear said Delhi Archdiocese spokesperson.
The Archdiocese further appeals to the authorities to foster an environment of dialogue to address misunderstandings and alleviate the animosity that fuels such incidents. The Catholic community seeks the support of the state government and law enforcement agencies in guaranteeing our unhindered right to worship without apprehension.
In light of these recent events, the Delhi Archdiocese urges immediate attention and action to protect the religious freedom of its faithful members.
