CHICAGO- Severe rainfall in Chicago leads to widespread flooding, causing car entrapment and cancellation of NASCAR race. The National Weather Service issued a "life-threatening" warning as roads became impassable, creeks and streams overflowed, and basements were flooded. Suburban areas like Cicero and Berwyn experienced up to 6 inches of rain. While flood warnings had mostly expired by evening, flooding led to the closure of sections on Interstate 55 and Interstate 290. Additionally, several cars were stranded in water on Interstate 55 near Pulaski Road, a major road in the city. Train services were also disrupted in certain areas of Chicago.
Katera Fisher experienced her car floating when she attempted to drive through the high water caused by the flooding. She shared her reaction of trying to escape the car but finding the water flooding her feet instead. Meanwhile, NASCAR officials had originally planned to complete the second half of the Xfinity Series race in downtown Chicago on Sunday morning. However, due to the ongoing rain, they made the decision to cancel the race and declared Cole Custer as the winner.
The NASCAR Cup Series race, on the other hand, began running through downtown in the afternoon. The start of the Chicago Cubs' game at Wrigley Field against the Cleveland Guardians remained delayed. According to meteorologist Ricky Castro from the National Weather Service, a storm system in the area was rotating instead of moving east, resulting in the prolonged heavy rainfall. The extensive concrete in the metropolitan area prevented the rain from being absorbed, leading to widespread flooding.
