Colombo - Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe is set to embark on a significant two-day visit to India on July 21, where he is expected to hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This will be Wickremesinghe's first visit to India since assuming the presidency following the ousting of Gotabaya Rajapaksa last year. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
Ahead of the trip, India's Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra will visit Sri Lanka to coordinate the arrangements for Wickremesinghe's visit to New Delhi. During his time in India, Wickremesinghe will focus on finalizing the implementation of several Indian projects related to power and energy, agriculture, and maritime affairs in Sri Lanka.
Accompanied by key ministers, including Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera, Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry, and Chief of President's Staff Sagala Ratnayake, President Wickremesinghe will engage in discussions to enhance bilateral cooperation.
The visit comes at a crucial time for Sri Lanka's economy, which has shown tentative signs of improvement. President Wickremesinghe has been implementing challenging economic reforms to revive the country's financial situation. Sri Lanka recently secured a bailout package of USD 2.9 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), spanning over four years and contingent on implementing necessary reforms.
President Wickremesinghe's visit to India aims to strengthen economic cooperation and explore opportunities for further collaboration between the two nations. As both countries work towards economic recovery and reform, this visit holds great significance for the future of bilateral relations and regional stability.
