Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur have been embroiled in a conflict since 3 May 2023, resulting in the loss of over 150 lives in the ongoing clashes. In an emotional appeal on Monday night, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take immediate action and bring peace to her home state.
While currently training in the USA for upcoming events like the World Championships and the Asian Games, Mirabai Chanu highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict on athletes and children alike. Many athletes have been unable to train due to the volatile situation, and children are deprived of their right to attend school safely. The weightlifter's heartfelt plea seeks to end the strife and restore tranquility to Manipur, safeguarding the well-being of its citizens.

“The conflict in Manipur is going to complete three months but peace is yet to return. Many players have not been able to train because of this conflict which has also hindered the studies of several children. Many lives have been lost and many houses have been burnt,” Mirabai said in a video on her Twitter handle.
