New Delhi - As the Opposition demands a debate on the no-confidence vote filed against the Centre in the Lok Sabha concerning the Manipur situation, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi asserted that the government is confident it possesses enough support to navigate a no-confidence vote, should it come to that.
Addressing the media on the seventh day of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Union Minister criticized the Opposition for not actively participating in discussions and cooperation in the passage of bills. He expressed the government's readiness to consider constructive suggestions, but also highlighted the sudden motion of no confidence brought forward by the Opposition. Despite this development, he conveyed that the government remains unfazed as it has the necessary numbers to withstand the no-confidence vote.
Moreover, Pralhad Joshi emphasized that Parliament provides the most suitable platform to discuss the prevailing situation in Manipur, as sought by the Opposition. The grand Opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A, has been insistent on setting aside all listed business in both Houses to debate the Manipur situation. They have also been pressing for a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the state of affairs in Manipur.
The Opposition members are urging the Lok Sabha Speaker to fix a date for voting on the earlier-filed no-confidence motion against the Centre, tabled by Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi.
Meanwhile, the Opposition parties have accused the government of "subverting" parliamentary traditions by passing bills despite the acceptance of the no-confidence motion by the Speaker in the Lok Sabha. Citing historical parliamentary practices, Congress MP Manish Tiwari highlighted the need to refrain from bringing substantive motions to forestall the no-confidence discussion.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, demanded an immediate discussion on the no-confidence motion as per Rule 198. Similarly, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha raised objections to the tabling and passing of bills while a no-confidence motion is pending. He urged the Speaker to halt all legislative business in the Lower House until the no-confidence motion is debated.
During the ongoing session, the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023, was passed in the Lok Sabha amid sloganeering by Opposition members over the Manipur situation.
