New Delhi - Hugo Javier Gobbi, Argentina's Ambassador to India, has revealed that Argentina is actively exploring the procurement of a comprehensive array of military hardware from India. The discussions encompass the acquisition of Tejas fighter planes, military helicopters, and BrahMos missiles from New Delhi. Ambassador Gobbi, in an exclusive conversation with ABP Live, highlighted the escalated bilateral relations between India and Argentina, which were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2019. This partnership has led to concerted efforts to enhance their defense and security collaboration. Remarkably, under this strategic umbrella, Argentina is contemplating the purchase of India's indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) for the first time.
Gobbi emphasized the ongoing talks regarding the acquisition of Tejas fighter aircraft by the Argentine Air Force, noting that the discussions are progressing positively. He mentioned that Argentina is also keen on helicopters, particularly India's HAL-produced aircraft. However, the Ambassador pointed out that a hurdle in the Tejas deal lies in the presence of British components in these fighter planes. India has proposed the Tejas-LCA Mk1 aircraft without these components, but customization would occur when Argentina formally orders the proposed batch of 16 fighters.
The Argentine Air Force has also shown interest in JF-17 fighters developed by China and Pakistan, US F-16s, Russia's MiG-35, and South Korea's FA-50. Argentina's dispute with the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands prevents them from purchasing arms containing British parts.
The collaboration between India and Argentina extends beyond military hardware. Talks are underway to export Dhruv advanced light helicopters (ALH) and BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. Argentine Defence Minister Jorge Enrique Taiana's recent visit to India served as a platform to discuss these deals. He met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and visited the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) facility in Bangalore. During this visit, a letter of intent (LoI) was signed for the acquisition of light and medium utility helicopters. Argentine military officials, including Joint Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Juan Martin Paleo and the Air Force Chief, have also visited India to bolster these negotiations.
Gobbi highlighted the technological impressiveness of BrahMos missiles and Indian helicopters, showcasing the interest Argentina has in these systems. He underlined the substantial potential for partnership and cooperation in the defense industry, marked by significant ongoing projects.
Furthermore, Gobbi highlighted Argentina's strategic inclination toward India due to India's autonomous global stance. He noted India's leadership role in the Global South and its alignment with Argentina's own perspectives, opening avenues for substantial partnership opportunities.
Amid global geopolitical tensions, Gobbi referenced the Russia-Ukraine conflict and underscored Argentina's commitment to principles of territorial integrity and international law. This commitment indirectly resonates with Argentina's own territorial disputes, such as the Falkland Islands issue.
In conclusion, Gobbi highlighted that both nations' autonomy in international matters, combined with shared values and perspectives, sets the stage for extensive cooperation and partnership. Argentina views India as a key player and a suitable partner for its defense and developmental aspirations. The interview also touched upon topics like the impact of global conflicts on the Global South's economy and the importance of addressing climate change in tandem with defense concerns. The multifaceted cooperation between India and Argentina underscores the dynamic nature of their relationship.
