St. Alipius

St. Alipius

St. Alipius, a friend of St. Augustine, was born in Tagaste, North Africa. He moved to Rome to study law and rose to the position of magistrate there. When Augustine arrived in Rome, Alipius resigned his position and accompanied him to Milan. He was baptized there in 387 or 394 alongside Augustine by St. Ambrose. Alipius became the bishop of Tagaste after the two were ordained in Hippo, North Africa, and he held that position for thirty years. Pope Gregory XIII added Alipius' name to Roman Martyrology in 1584. Augustine's biography of Alipius makes it very apparent that he was holy. His feast day is celebrated on August 15th.
