Young Readers Delight in Greek Cuisine at Sharjah International Book Fair

Young readers flocked with excitement to the Cookery Corner at the 42nd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) where the delightful aroma of Mussel Saganaki with feta and fennel, prepared by Greek chef Marianna Leivaditaki, filled the air. Curious Grade 7 students gathered around as Chef Marianna created the traditional Greek dish from the Island of Crete, even asking if mussels were "living things."

Chef Marianna, the author of "Agean: Recipes from the Mountains to the Sea," explained that Mussel Saganaki is a unique dish, as it combines seafood with cheese, which is unusual in traditional cooking. She encouraged the children to be creative and use their own ingredients, substituting fish or prawns for mussels and experimenting with different flavors.

The London-based chef, who specializes in blending Middle Eastern and Greek cuisines, shared her love for food and the way it brings people together. She even mentioned her joy in discovering local spices and nuts in the UAE's souqs during her visit.

As Chef Marianna finished the dish, the children eagerly asked if it was good, to which she replied with a smile, "It is very good." The children, savoring their first taste of Greek food, chatted with her and inquired about her presence on social media.

The Sharjah International Book Fair, held under the theme 'We Speak Books,' is currently welcoming 2,033 publishers and exhibitors from 109 nations for 12 days of literary and culinary adventures at Expo Centre Sharjah from November 1-12, 2023.
