New Delhi - External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar highlighted on Wednesday that India's procurement policies significantly contributed to stabilizing the global oil and gas markets amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
This, in turn, played a crucial role in managing global inflation. Speaking during a discussion with journalist Lionel Barber in London, Jaishankar emphasized India's strategic approach to oil purchases, preventing potential spikes in global oil prices. He stated that India's size allowed it to command respect in the markets, unlike smaller countries that faced challenges in securing responses to their tender inquiries from LNG suppliers. Jaishankar expressed the hope for acknowledgment for India's role in softening the oil and gas markets through its purchase policies.
Regarding Canada's allegation of India's involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Jaishankar asserted that India is open to an investigation but urged Canada to provide evidence to support its claims. He highlighted concerns about violent and extreme political opinions within Canadian politics advocating separatism from India. Jaishankar noted instances of attacks on Indian diplomats, including the High Commission, and emphasized the importance of responsible use of freedom of speech and expression.
In summary, Jaishankar underscored India's positive impact on global oil and gas markets through its purchase policies and addressed Canada's allegations, expressing openness to an investigation while calling for evidence to be shared.
