Though little is known about Saint Gatian's life, we do know that he was the first French bishop of Tours and that he was supposedly a student of Saint Denis of Paris. When Gatian arrived in the pagan territory of Gaul, which had not yet heard the Good News, he sowed the first seeds of the faith in the Tours region, establishing the Church's foundations in the famous Saint Martin city.
St. Gatian passed away in 337. His feast day is celebrated on December 18.
