JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Hamas' conditions for ending the ongoing conflict and releasing hostages on Sunday. In response to Hamas' demands, which included a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and leaving the group in power, Netanyahu stated that he outright rejects the "terms of surrender" proposed by Hamas.
As Israeli planes resumed bombing the southern Gaza Strip, Netanyahu emphasized that he will not compromise on full Israeli security control of all territory west of the Jordan River. This comes amid increased pressure to secure the release of 136 hostages still held captive in Gaza following an attack by Hamas militants on October 7.
The Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum urged Netanyahu to take decisive action and not abandon those kidnapped during the October incident. Netanyahu faces public demands to address the issue, with protesters outside his residence calling for immediate efforts to bring the hostages home.
On the topic of Palestinian statehood, Netanyahu took a stronger stance, insisting on full Israeli security control over all territory west of the Jordan River. This comes in contrast to recent discussions with U.S. President Joe Biden, who suggested possible solutions for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with a non-militarized government.
Netanyahu and Biden appear to differ on the issue of Palestinian statehood, with Netanyahu asserting that his insistence on Israeli security control has prevented the establishment of a Palestinian state that could pose an existential threat to Israel. Despite international and internal pressures, Netanyahu affirmed his commitment to maintaining this position.
