Imran Khan, the ousted former Prime Minister of Pakistan, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, are facing additional legal woes as they have been sentenced to 14 years in prison, a day after Khan received a 10-year jail term. Khan is already serving a three-year sentence for corruption, with the latest convictions related to leaking state secrets and a separate graft case. The former premier, who claims the charges are politically motivated, has been in detention since August, and his wife surrendered following Wednesday's verdict.
The couple, married in 2018 just before Khan assumed office, is accused of unlawfully profiting from the sale of state gifts. The sentencing not only adds to Khan's existing jail term but also entails a 10-year disqualification from holding public office, according to his PTI party. The ruling has been criticized by the party, with a spokesman lamenting it as "Another sad day in our judicial system history, which is being dismantled."
These legal setbacks come a week before Pakistan's national elections on February 8, where Khan is ineligible to run. The sentences are expected to be served concurrently. In response to the court's decision, Khan, a former international cricketer, called on the public to seek justice through their votes on February 8 while emphasizing the need for peaceful engagement. He asserted, "Tell them that we are not sheep that can be driven with a stick."
