On Sunday, Russia announced that its forces had made progress towards Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine and taken control of the settlement of Bohdanivka. The Russian defense ministry stated on Telegram that units from the Southern grouping had fully liberated Bohdanivka, which is located west of the Russian-held city of Bakhmut. Bohdanivka, situated about 5 kilometers east of Chasiv Yar, is strategically important as it hosts a forward artillery base for the Ukrainian army, offering protection to cities like Kramatorsk and Slaviansk.
The veracity of Russia's claim could not be independently confirmed, and Ukraine has not responded regarding Bohdanivka. In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," President Zelenskiy emphasized the urgent need for the U.S. to expedite the $60 billion aid package approved by the House of Representatives. He stressed the importance of quickly transferring weapons to Ukraine ahead of an expected Russian offensive. Zelenskiy reiterated warnings that Russia aims to seize Chasiv Yar by May 9, a significant holiday in Russia commemorating victory over Nazi forces in World War II.
Ukraine anticipates a major Russian offensive in the spring and summer, especially after Russia captured Avdiivka, east of Chasiv Yar, during the winter. Despite Ukraine's Defense Ministry denying Russia's complete capture of Bohdanivka last week, it acknowledged losing some positions in the village in the Donetsk region.
