Ukraine has commenced using extended-range ballistic missiles against Russia, supplied covertly by the US, according to American officials.
These missiles, part of a previously undisclosed US support package, arrived this month to bolster Ukraine's capabilities. The decision to keep this aid secret was made to safeguard Ukraine's operational security.
These longer-range missiles, identified as an advanced version of the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), were confirmed by a state department spokesperson. While the US had previously supplied Ukraine with mid-range ATACMS, concerns about compromising US military readiness had delayed the provision of more powerful weaponry.
Officials worried about potential escalation if Ukraine were to use these missiles to strike inside Russian territory. However, after President Joe Biden quietly approved the deployment in February, they were sent in response to Ukrainian requests.
Although the exact number of missiles sent remains unclear, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan indicated that additional shipments were planned.
The new aid, worth $61bn, includes a substantial weapons package alongside economic support. President Biden emphasized that this aid is not solely about weaponry but about enhancing global security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the aid, expressing determination to counter Russian aggression. He warned of an anticipated Russian offensive following recent territorial losses.
Ukrainian forces have faced challenges due to ammunition and air defense system shortages. US and Western allies' delays in aid deliveries were cited as contributing factors to territorial losses.
As the conflict continues, casualties on both sides have mounted, and millions of people have been displaced since Russia's invasion in February 2022.
