St. Boniface was well-known for his ability to effectively use the regional traditions and culture of his day to win people over to Christ. He was also recognized for his audacious faith. In the seventh century, he was born in Devonshire, England. He received his education at a Benedictine monastery, entered the order, and, rather than ascending to the position of abbot for his monastery in 719, was dispatched as a missionary to Germany.
He demolished idols and pagan temples there and erected churches in their place. After being appointed archbishop of Mainz, he rebuilt churches and constructed ecclesiastical buildings there.
On June 5, 754, while on a mission in Holland, he and his 52 companions were murdered by a group of pagans in an attack. This led to his martyrdom.
