Born in 170, Hippolytus went on to become a revered theologian and priest in the early third century. But when Callistus was elected Pope in 217, he rebelled against the Church. In the Sardinian mines, where he was sent in 235, he first encountered St. Pontian.
Before his passing, Pontian assisted Hippolytus in making amends with the Church. Hippolytus was killed in 235 in Sardinia, where he had been banished for becoming the first antipope in Church history. His works, including "A Refutation of All Heresies," "Song of Songs," and "The Apostolic Tradition," are significant.
He is revered as the patron saint of horses, prison guards, prison officers and prison workers.
