Galway - Guards are investigating a serious assault at Renmore Army Barracks in Galway, where a Waterford-based army chaplain, Fr. Paul F. Murphy, was stabbed multiple times on Thursday night, August 15. The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 pm, prompting an immediate response from Gardaí, including members of the Garda Armed Support Unit.
Fr. Murphy, a chaplain in his 50s, was quickly transported to University Hospital Galway for treatment. His injuries, though serious, are not life-threatening. Fr. Murphy expressed his gratitude for the support he has received, saying, "Friends, thanks for your prayers, love, and concern. Sorry that I can't reply to all messages and take all the calls coming my way. I'm doing ok, just awaiting surgery. All will be well."
The assailant, a teenage male, was swiftly restrained by members of the Defence Forces on duty at the barracks. The Irish Defence Forces released a statement, explaining, "Soldiers on duty responded to the immediate threat with appropriate force to ensure the safety of personnel and secure the area. The assailant was quickly detained and handed over to An Garda Síochána." It was also confirmed that shots were fired by personnel during the incident.
The teenager was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at a Garda station in the northwestern region. The scene at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa (Renmore) Barracks is preserved, and a technical examination will be carried out by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit today.
Gardaí have confirmed that investigations are ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
