A Russian drone attack on a multi-storey residential building in Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi district on Friday evening has left one person dead and injured five others, according to Ukrainian officials. The drone strike triggered a significant fire across the top floors of the high-rise, prompting an evacuation of over 100 residents.
Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, confirmed the damage, noting that apartments between the 17th and 21st floors were severely impacted. “Apartments were on fire on the 20th floor,” Popko stated via Telegram, adding that emergency services worked to contain the blaze while firefighters used extended hoists to reach the affected floors.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the deceased was a teenage girl, and one of the injured victims required hospital treatment. A first aid station was established near the site to assist residents in need of medical care.
The assault occurred during an hour-long air raid alert across Kyiv. Shortly after the initial alert ended, a subsequent warning was issued as additional drones approached the city. Officials also reported that drone fragments fell in an open area in the Shevchenkivskyi district, though no casualties were reported there.
Ukrainian air defense systems were active throughout the assault, intercepting drones during the alerts. Emergency services have since brought the fire under control, but the attack has underscored the ongoing threats faced by Kyiv's residents amid the protracted conflict.
