Mar Thomas Tharayil has been consecrated as the new Archbishop of the Changanassery Archeparchy. The installation ceremony was conducted under the Clergy of Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil. The newly appointed Archbishop, accompanied by other bishops, arrived at St. Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral from the archbishop’s residence at 8:45 a.m., welcomed with the traditional ringing of church bells and the sounding of 101 ceremonial gun salutes.
Archbishop Mar Joseph Perumthottam extended a warm welcome, expressing gratitude for the support the church and the community have extended over the years. Following the installation prayers, the Major Archbishop blessed the new Metropolitan, symbolically passing on the staff and other episcopal insignia. Mar Thomas Tharayil was then formally led to the official seat of the Metropolitan. Subsequently, clergy leaders from 18 foranes within the archeparchy gathered to pledge their allegiance to the new archbishop in a ceremony that witnessed the participation of thousands of faithful.
Following his installation, Mar Thomas Tharayil celebrated the Holy Qurbana, with Mar Joseph Perumthottam and Mar Joseph Kallarangatt as co-celebrants. Archbishop Dr. Thomas J. Netto of Thiruvananthapuram extended a congratulatory message. Numerous bishops from both within and outside the Syro-Malabar Church attended, offering their well-wishes to the newly appointed Metropolitan. The Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, was also present at the event.
Mar Thomas Tharayil, the ninth head and fifth metropolitan of the Changanassery Archeparchy, succeeds Mar Joseph Perumthottam, who retired after leading the Archeparchy for 17 years.
