The Kerala Christian Community Uganda celebrated its annual day on Sunday, November 3, 2024, with vibrant festivities in Kampala the capital city of Uganda. The celebrations commenced with a Holy Mass at Lourdel House, Nsambya, led by Fr. Abhilash Thomas VC, Fr. George Nedumattom CMF, and Fr. George Athikkalam of the Missionaries of Africa. Following the Mass, the community gathered at the Cardinal Nsubuga Centre, Nsambya, for a lively program.
The event opened with a traditional 'Kolkali' dance performed by the community’s women members, followed by a prayer song from the catechism teachers. Sheena Jose, Chairperson of the Kerala Christian Community Uganda, warmly welcomed attendees, and Fr. Charles Kisule from the Missionaries of Africa inaugurated the event with a lamp lighting ceremony and an inspiring address.
In a special segment, prizes were awarded to catechism teachers and children, recognizing their dedication and achievements. A fundraising lucky draw organized by catechism students added excitement to the day’s events, drawing enthusiastic participation. Varghese Thambi, President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Dr. K.M. Mathew, President of Catholic Congress Uganda, also delivered speeches highlighting the community's shared values and faith. Fr. George Nedumattom CMF joined them in offering blessings and words of encouragement.
Distinguished guests included Sr. Franclin SD, Sr. Bindu, and Sr. Rejani from the Queen of Apostles, alongside members from the Missionaries of the Poor. Catechism students and other community members showcased a variety of cultural performances, adding color and joy to the occasion. Jessy Johnson, the catechism principal, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the event's success.
The program was skillfully hosted by catechism leaders Johan Johnson and Betsy Binu, who engaged the audience with their warm and lively presentation. The celebration highlighted the Kerala Christian community’s unity, cultural heritage, and enduring faith in Uganda.
