Manipur: After nearly a week of school closures due to widespread protests and a curfew, the Manipur government has announced that classes will resume in all schools across the state starting Monday, November 25, 2024.
In an order issued on Sunday, L. Nandakumar, Director of Education (Schools), stated, "Normal classes will resume for all government, government-aided, private, and central schools in the state from November 25, 2024 (Monday)." The directive also instructed zonal education officers to notify schools under their jurisdiction and ensure necessary preparations for reopening.
Schools were originally shut down following a government order on November 17, 2024, amid protests and curfews in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal. The unrest stemmed from the discovery of six civilian bodies—three women and three children—who had gone missing after a clash on November 11, during which security forces killed ten armed militants.
Meanwhile, curfews were partially eased on Sunday in the affected districts, allowing residents to purchase essential items between 5 a.m. and 12 noon.
The state home department has also extended the suspension of mobile internet services in nine districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl, until November 25, 2024.
