New Delhi: Sr. Alessandra Smerilli, Secretary of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, emphasized that synodality must become a way of life for the Catholic Church. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, she highlighted the importance of this approach in addressing the Church's mission in a rapidly evolving world.
Addressing participants at the Archbishop’s House, Sr. Smerilli reiterated Pope Francis’ vision of a synodal Church rooted in communion, participation, and mission. She stressed that embracing synodality goes beyond methodology, describing it as a transformative way of being that fosters inclusivity and renews the Church's mission.
The event, titled “A New Way of Being the Church: Synodality,” was held on November 30 and brought together bishops from northern India, theologians, and lay representatives. Organized by the General Secretariat of the Conference of Catholic Bishops in India (CCBI), the consultation focused on how synodality could shape the Church’s work and engagement with society.
Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Couto of Delhi, Secretary General of the CCBI, inaugurated the gathering with a call for unity and shared responsibility within the Church. “Synodality reflects a renewed journey of faith, fostering unity amidst diversity through collective discernment,” he remarked.
Fr. Christopher Vimalraj, Associate Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI, presented the CCBI Pastoral Plan—Mission 2033, outlining strategic steps for evangelization and pastoral initiatives leading to the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033.
The consultation included in-depth discussions on aligning the Church’s mission with the principles of synodality, emphasizing collective responsibility and active participation. Attendees reflected on how this approach could strengthen the Church's role and presence in society.
