Thiruvananthapuram: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) has recorded the statement of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajith Kumar as part of an investigation into allegations of financial misconduct and accumulation of disproportionate wealth. The questioning took place at the Vigilance Special Investigation Unit I office in Thiruvananthapuram.
Sources revealed that the officer faced inquiries regarding multiple allegations, including the unauthorized removal of valuable trees from the Malappuram District Police Chief’s camp, accepting bribes in a case involving online journalist Sajan Scaria, misappropriation of seized gold from smugglers, the construction of an opulent residence worth crores, and general wealth accumulation.
Ajith Kumar reportedly denied all accusations, asserting that the claims were fabricated by individuals with vested interests and influenced by fundamentalist elements.
The investigation was initiated following allegations raised by Nilambur MLA P.V. Anvar, which led State Police Chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb to recommend a Vigilance probe. Saheb, who conducted a preliminary inquiry through the Special Investigation Team, highlighted the corruption-related nature of the allegations in his communication to the state government, emphasizing the need for an independent anti-graft investigation.
The government has granted the Vigilance team six months to examine the claims and submit a detailed report. Should the allegations hold merit, formal cases will be registered, and further legal action will proceed.
The Special Investigation Unit I, with jurisdiction across the state, is handling the inquiry into incidents reportedly spanning multiple districts.
