Thiruvananthapuram: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has successfully raised Rs 20.44 crore to aid the victims of the Wayanad landslide. This funding was part of their “Rebuild Wayanad” initiative.
VK Sanoj, DYFI State Secretary, shared, “We had pledged to raise enough funds to build 25 houses for those who lost their homes.” He emphasized that the aim was not only to collect money but to actively engage in various tasks to earn it. “We received incredible support from the public as we carried out activities like collecting scrap, old newspapers, and selling them. Our volunteers also ran tea stalls, climbed coconut trees, and took up daily wage work to raise the funds,” he added.
Sanoj noted that the total funds raised might increase as volunteers continue their efforts.
The campaign garnered substantial contributions from all sections of the community, including children who donated their savings instead of celebrating birthdays. Many women contributed jewellery, and some even donated land to the cause.
DYFI also organized interactive community events. One such event was a photography challenge at beaches, where people could get their photos taken against the ocean in exchange for donations. Additionally, a folk music performance by the Shakti Folk Band in Ernakulam raised funds, and an auction of livestock took place in Palakkad.
Other fundraising activities included a football tournament in Kollam, food stalls selling biryani and Kerala sadhya, as well as the sale of fish and vegetables.
Even temple priests donated their daily earnings, and bus and auto drivers contributed their daily income to the cause.
This is not the first time DYFI has used such creative fundraising methods. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization raised over Rs 10 crore through similar initiatives, such as collecting and selling scrap materials.
The DYFI expressed deep gratitude to both their volunteers and the public for their overwhelming support. "This effort is a testament to the power of collective action," Sanoj concluded.
