New Delhi: New Zealand’s education sector is experiencing robust expansion, driven by a 24% year-on-year increase in international student enrollments, as reported by Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds. Between January and August 2024, enrollments reached 73,535, marking a notable 6% rise compared to 2023.
Minister Simmonds highlighted the significance of this growth, emphasizing New Zealand’s global reputation for delivering high-quality education. She noted that international students not only enhance the diversity and vibrancy of campuses but also contribute substantially to the economy by creating jobs and supporting local businesses across the country.
Regional growth has also been remarkable, with Gisborne experiencing a 126% surge in enrollments and Marlborough seeing a 45% increase. Other regions such as Hawke’s Bay and Waikato have also shown strong performances, with growth rates of 28% and 26%, respectively. Minister Simmonds expressed confidence in the upward trend, projecting further enrollment increases by year-end. She acknowledged the efforts of education providers in achieving these results and underscored the broader benefits of international education, including fostering global connections and innovation.
The diversity of international students in New Zealand continues to expand. While China and India remain the largest contributors, there has been a growing influx of students from countries like the United States, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, each now representing 3% of total enrollments.
Minister Simmonds pointed out that this diversity strengthens the education sector’s resilience and adaptability. She also noted that universities are nearing pre-pandemic levels, with enrollment figures now only 7% below those seen before COVID-19. This recovery, she said, reflects the enduring flexibility and strength of New Zealand’s education providers as they navigate global challenges and continue to excel.
