Serbian President Vucic vows to fulfill protesters' demands following train station tragedy.

Belgrade: Facing weeks of student protests over a deadly train station collapse last month, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic sought to ease tensions on Wednesday by agreeing to meet the protesters' demands.

The disaster occurred on November 1, when a newly renovated roof at the Novi Sad railway station in northern Serbia collapsed, killing 14 people and injuring three others, one of whom later died. The tragedy sparked outrage, with opposition parties, students, and the public blaming government corruption, negligence, and cronyism for the substandard construction.

While Vucic and his ruling coalition denied the accusations, vowing accountability for those responsible, student protesters called for the release of all documents related to the station's renovation and the freeing of arrested demonstrators.

In a rare move, Vucic pledged to meet these demands. "Everything we have, including what the prosecutor's office possesses, will be made public tomorrow," he said during a press conference. He also confirmed the release of arrested protesters and promised to pardon anyone convicted in future trials.

Despite these concessions, hundreds of students gathered outside his office, chanting for his resignation. "For those who hear this noise, it’s the sound of about 600 people... I respect them greatly," Vucic said during a live TV broadcast.

Student leader Irina Sekulic vowed protests would continue until authorities apprehended individuals who had clashed with students during demonstrations.

Opposition leader Savo Manojlovic criticized Vucic’s control over the legal documents regarding the disaster, calling it "a disgrace" that the President, not the prosecutors, held the evidence. "This is the collapse of the state," Manojlovic posted on X.
