Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced on Tuesday that Israel would maintain security control over Gaza with unrestricted military freedom following the anticipated defeat of Hamas. His statement comes amidst a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes and ground operations continue.
At least 14 Palestinians were killed in Israeli military strikes on Tuesday, with 10 casualties reported in a single airstrike targeting a house in Gaza City's Daraj suburb. The attack demolished the building and caused significant damage to nearby structures, according to local medics. Four additional fatalities were reported in separate airstrikes in Gaza City and Beit Lahiya. The Israeli military has not yet issued a statement regarding these incidents.
Meanwhile, in Rafah, near the border with Egypt, Israeli tanks advanced into the western Mawasi area, previously designated as a humanitarian safe zone. Witnesses reported heavy tank fire that forced dozens of families to flee northward towards Khan Younis.
The ongoing conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise assault on Israel, killing 1,200 people, primarily civilians, and taking over 250 hostages. In response, Israel initiated a large-scale air and ground offensive that, according to Gaza's health authorities, has claimed over 45,000 lives, predominantly civilians. The relentless campaign has displaced almost the entire population of the enclave, reducing much of Gaza to rubble.
The situation continues to escalate, drawing international attention and sparking urgent calls for a ceasefire to address the worsening humanitarian crisis.
